Although it marked the end of an era for Blackberry users after Blackberry officially discontinued its software earlier this year, the popular black phone was best known for its QWERTY keyboard, which users enjoyed the touch and click sound of. At its peak in 2009, Blackberry owned 20% of the global smartphone market, with its ability to send pre-game email. And who can forget BBM – Blackberry’s own instant messaging service. The demise of the company was due to a combination of factors; The iPhone from Apple and the transition to a touch screen played a big role in this. Despite this, BlackBerry has retained some loyal customers. 21% of Reddit users say it’s the keyboard on their old devices that they miss the most, and it tops the list.

Battery life

Smartphones are basically small computers in our pockets, and while that’s great, it’s a huge battery drain when we’re streaming music, watching YouTube videos, and listening to podcasts, to name a few. Our old phones were just phones, used to make calls and send texts and because of this the battery on them can last for days, as one Reddit user pointed out: “The only thing I miss about old school phones is what seems like infinite battery life.” Probably not entirely infinite. However, the Nokia 3310’s battery can last up to a month in standby mode, and up to 22 hours of talk time. One in ten Reddit users says battery life is the feature they miss the most in their first mobile phone, while over 17% say the ability to replace the battery is the feature they miss the most.

Connection ID

For Generation Zers who grew up with iPhones and lived through the rapid advancement of mobile phones, these are some of the earlier features like Touch ID that they miss the most. When Face ID was first introduced in September 2017, face scanning technology was seen as a safer and faster way to unlock. However, due to the epidemic and the need to wear face masks, some unexpected problems have occurred in facial recognition technology. Users cannot effectively unlock their devices while wearing a mask. Although this was fixed later, many users feel that the simplicity of pressing a button and not having to lift the phone to your face is more efficient and convenient, with nearly 14% of Reddit users saying they would rather go back to Touch ID.

Today’s smartphones seem to have been optimized to the max and can seemingly do everything, but this made them look exactly the same. Gone are the days of flicking your wrist on a flip phone to answer a call or slapping it to shut up someone, which is reflected in Essendex’s research; 11% of users lose sight of the satisfying feeling of ending a call with a flip phone. But for those who are missing out on more outlandish designs, you might be in luck with recent versions that look to stand out from the crowd, like the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4, which folds in half. However, it remains to be seen if it can be closed and locked and not fall off pieces like the old ones.

Most smartphones nowadays use tempered glass screens, which provide great picture quality and the responsive touch is a clear advance over its predecessors. But, where modern technology falls, it’s easy to scratch or worse, smashing an expensive repair bill or having to buy an entirely new phone.

This wasn’t a big deal with older phones, as one Reddit user pointed out: “My old Nokia still works after falling down the stairs a few times. I think it might be made of human bones.” Nearly 10% of Reddit users said it’s the durability of their old cell phones that they miss the most.

headphone jack

When Apple first removed the headphone jack in September 2016 and only allowed their earbuds to connect via the USB-C port, people were pissed off at the need for an adapter to connect their favorite headphones. To this day it seems many Apple users would like to see the headphone jack come back, with one in ten users saying that is the thing they miss the most. There are still phones with headphone jacks available in the market, but with the growing popularity of wireless earbuds, it looks like the headphone jack may soon be a thing of the past.

Despite the fact that our phones enable us to stay connected at all times, many feel nostalgic for the time when our phones were just phones. There was no such thing as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and Tik-Tok or TwitterNo instant messages with notifications at all times of the day. Nearly 5% of users said they miss being addicted to their cell phone, and felt they should be available 24/7.

Some phones are now made for the sole purpose of playing like the Xiaomi Black Shark 5 Pro, which has the capabilities of portable consoles like the Nintendo Switch. Most phones on the market are capable of streaming online multiplayer games and also have the ability to connect to console controllers. The nostalgia for the classic games, though, cannot be understated due to its simplicity, with Snake taking eighth place on the list.

Esendex They analyzed thousands of comments on 13 different Reddit forums, discussing which features people miss the most on their first mobile phone. Added the amount of comments and upvotes on those comments to determine the top eight list.
