A short list of the physical requirements to be a model: Do you really have to be tall? Answer – No
If you’ve ever thought about modeling but weren’t sure if you could meet the physical requirements, you’ve come to the right place. The following will give you all the basics if it’s a good idea for you to continue.
1) Pleasant complexion. Generally, a pimple here or there won’t count you out. However, if you have “problem skin”, it will take a lot of time and money to “photoshop” it and cost too much money. Most customers won’t want to pay for that, or you.
2) A well-toned body. Obviously, fat bulges anywhere on the body won’t work. Even a thin body can have flabby areas if the person is not exercising.
3) Well-proportioned body. Hopefully this doesn’t need too much further explanation. In general, runway and editorial models are slimmer, while promotional models are fuller and voluptuous. Find out who you are before applying to agencies.
4) Symmetrical and well-proportioned facial features. This requirement can be a little tricky because there is more diversity in the modeling market than ever before. In general, don’t let anyone tell you to send your photos to a modeling agency. Many “ugly ducklings” of youth became the superstars of today’s model.
5) The problem with height is mainly age. There is no height requirement for children or actors. For teens and adults, it’s over 5’6″ for women and 5’10 for men. For track, girls must be at least 5’9″. If a person is below these heights, they can still consider petite modeling (if female), promotional modeling, or acting.
6) Natural-looking hair with a versatile cut. Unusual hair colors or cuts will immediately decrease your chances of modeling.
7) Tattoos that can be easily covered are usually not a problem. However, large tattoos or piercings that cannot be easily removed and covered will prevent clients from booking you.
8) What about being a “parts” model? This means just modeling the hands, feet, face, etc. The answer to this is basically to forget it. Almost all agencies simply use their current models for these tasks.
9) And now a word about age. As our society ages, there are more modeling opportunities for older models. So don’t hesitate to apply even in your 60s and 70s.
