AMD’s Ryzen 7 5800X3D, the world’s first 3D V-Cache CPUit hasn’t been around for a while and the chip seems to be overclocked to 5.5 GHz.
AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D 3D V-Cache CPU overclocked to 5.5 GHz on ASUS X570 motherboard
Spotted by TUM_APISAK, we have our first look at what appears to be a heavily overclocked AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D CPU. We’ve seen the same chip before overclocked to 5.15 GHz using an AM4 motherboard with an external clock generator, but nowhere have we seen an overclock as impressive as this one.
The CPU-z screenshot shows that the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D CPU has been successfully verified with a 5.5GHz overclock. The CPU clock multiplier is set to x55 which means this is not a standard BCLK overclock. The chip ran at just under 1.3V (1,296V) and although we don’t know the exact cooling used, it was featured on the ASUS XROG Crosshair VIII DARK HERO motherboard and is ASUS’ best X570 offering. There are no benchmarks of performance results, but we know that BIOS used is 4201 which was published in April 2022.
So apparently it’s not the new BIOS that was included in this testing. Now we’ve already seen AMD CPUs offer clock speeds of up to 5.85GHz with the new Zen 4 core architecture, but what’s impressive about this 5.5GHz clock is that it’s done on a single 3D V-Cache chip that is currently available to users. Of course AMD is working on it new Zen 4 V-Cache parts too but opening Zen 3 V-Cache OC to users will breathe new life into the AM4 platform which is still the best seller despite the launch of the latest Intel Core and AMD Ryzen CPUs. A few months ago we reported that there was a BIOS in the works that could enable OC support on the 5800X3D:
However, there seems to be a separate BIOS for overclocking that AMD is keeping under wraps, although we hear that some board manufacturers are expected to release this BIOS soon. Whether or not this BIOS releases the chain of forced locks imposed by AMD on overclocking is another question and just to be sure, overclocking the Ryzen 7 5800X3D will void its CPU warranty. I think the BIOS will be useful for overclockers who want to break some records with the chip.
The CPU was never meant to be overclocked due to voltage limitations, but AMD said that future iterations of 3D V-Cache will provide better overclocking and clocking capabilities. AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D works door-to-door with the new Zen 4 core & bringing overclock capabilities to the platform will bring even faster CPU performance in games.
