The results, fresh from testing by the giant Dxomark, put the Pixel 7 Pro on par with the Honor Magic 4 Ultimate with a total score of 147 points — just one point ahead of the latest Apple iPhone 14 Pro.

In the report, the Pixel 7 Pro was praised for its “consistent and balanced camera experience all around” and for delivering significant improvements over its predecessor, the Pixel 6 Pro, particularly in terms of zoom qualityvideo performance and “software tuning”.

This improved software tuning allows the Pixel 7 Pro to achieve the highest overall color rendering score – the key to delivering natural skin tones.

Comparing the new Pixel to the iPhone 14 Pro, Dxomark gave Google’s flagship a higher score in the new “Friends and family” category, thanks to its superior contrast, ski tone and ability to freeze motion when shooting portraits. The Pixel 7 Pro also took credit for its “superior quality” zoom, which produced better quality images than the iPhone 14 Pro and across a wider zoom range.

There are, however, a few areas where the iPhone 14 Pro still has the upper hand. Apple’s flagship model is said to provide the first overall video recording experience. It also scores best in Dxomark’s Bokeh and Preview tests, beating the Pixel 7 Pro by quite a margin.

Testers also felt that low-light video and “close-range” zoom were areas where the Pixel 7 Pro could use some improvement.

Of course, Dxomark, as always, attempts the impossible task of condensing an extremely complex and diverse set of tests into a single number.

Ultimately, choosing the ‘best’ smartphone camera will always come down to customer choice. If you shoot mostly stills and like powerful zoom capabilities, then the Pixel 7 Pro is the one to beat. However, if video is your thing, the iPhone 14 Pro might be a much better fit for you – don’t worry it’ll come in a notch behind the Pixel.
