Discord Launches $3/Month ‘Nitro Basic’ Subscription

Since the launch of Discord In 2015, it grew from a simple social app where people (mostly gamers) could chat and create little haiku bots for an all-in-one replacement for Zoom, Slack and Facebook.

As it has expanded to major status, its many charms have remained elusive to people who use it as a basic chat and social networking app. Like me, for example; I’m on Discord because I really need to share my thoughts on royal gossip and YA fantasy and sci-fi novels, but I’m not a very experienced user. That’s not to mention the many people who still struggle with managing their Instagram and WhatsApp notifications and may not see the point of switching to Discord at all.

That’s why today Discord introduced several new features that make it easier and more attractive to use Discord. In addition to introducing a more affordable subscription tier that unlocks some of the more desirable payment features, it’s also launching a new app directory and adding some new resources for developers and startups looking to do business on the platform.

Make My ‘Moji

Unlike many (now defunct) social media platforms, Discord does not generate revenue from advertising. While the core Discord experience is free, the company offers Nitro, a $10-a-month subscription service that unlocks users the ability to make custom emojis, support servers, stream HD video, and upload larger files.

If you’re already on Discord, you might have noticed that other people have awesome avatars, and maybe you’ve been dying to get your own. I certainly feel that way, but my jealousy never made me pay $10 a month for a subscription, especially when I also had to budget for ad-free Hulu. But now Discord offers Nitro Basic. For $3 a month, I can now make all the chameleon heart emoticons my chats crave, as well as upload larger files and get new badges on my profile to indicate my status.

Breaking the ice

For many newcomers, Discord feels a bit like a fun but chaotic house party. You can’t just walk in; someone has to call you. You have no idea where the bathroom is. You stand by the fridge for about an hour, eating chips and wondering why you’re even there.
