One of the fundamental tenets of Minecraft is how it expands and evolves over time, and the coming year will be no different for the developers at Mojang Studio. At least one major content update is planned for Minecraft, and Mojang Studios finally revealed part of its plan to deliver fresh content to players on Saturday.
During Minecraft Live 2022Mojang Studios has taken over Minecraft 1.20, a currently untitled content update aimed at everything vanilla Minecraft players at some point in 2023. The focus of this update is player expression, representation and creativity, and Mojang Studios wants to add features that allow players to more effectively play the way they want to be whoever they want to be. According to the creators behind the legendary survival game, this update is all about making Minecraft “Minecraftier”. This time, however, Mojang Studios is approaching the next Minecraft content update a little differently.
The main change that Mojang Studios brings with the Minecraft 1.20 update is the way it announces features. Both the Caves & Cliffs Update and The Wild Update were mired in controversy due to a number of announced features that were later delayed or canceled, such as archaeology, birch forest improvements, and fireflies. Mojang Studios is responding to community feedback and now only intends to reveal features and content that are far into development and have little chance of being delayed or abandoned.
Deliberately avoiding releasing the full plan or even a name for the Minecraft 1.20 update will allow Mojang Studio to work even more closely with the community on its development, while focusing only on features that are almost in the hands of players. This change, however, means that Mojang Studios only showcased a few features coming to Minecraft 1.20, with more to be revealed in the coming months. Here’s everything from the upcoming Minecraft 1.20 content update that was shown during Minecraft Live 2022:
- Seven new default characters. Separate from the actual 1.20 update, but related in theme, Minecraft’s infamous Steve and Alex characters are about to make new friends. For the first time in years, players will have new default skins to choose from.
- The seven characters being added are Makene, Efe, Noor, Kai, Ari, Sunny and Zuri
- Each character is visually unique, with a diverse range of looks including darker skin tones and even prosthetics
- The new characters will come to Minecraft in late November or early December 2022 in a separate update
- Camels. Besides which mob wins Minecraft Live Mob Vote 2022Minecraft update 1.20 will also include the camel, an alternative horse that lives in the desert.
- Camels offer a unique riding experience with the ability to “take off” instead of high jump
- Camels also support two-player saddles, a first for Minecraft mounts
- Camels have many unique animations, such as lying down
- Passive mobs can be found in desert villages
- Camels are tall enough that enemy mobs cannot reach players while riding them
- Camels can be bred using cacti
- Hanging signs. The classic sign that has helped players point and navigate in Minecraft for years is finally getting an alternative form – hanging signs.
- Hanging signs combine bare logs and chains
- Hanging signs come in several varieties, including two chains when hung from the bottom of blocks, one chain that ends in a “V” shape when hung from a narrow block like a fence, and a two-chain pole when hung from the side of a block
- Players can change the color of the hanging signs by using different types of wood to make them
- Hyphens are otherwise identical to regular characters in terms of text input
- Carved bookshelves. An exciting addition to Minecraft 1.20 is a new type of bookshelf, one with a more refined experience that’s also fully functional.
- Carved bookshelves can store up to 6 books of any type
- Players dynamically add and remove books from the bookshelf – there are no in-game UI menus
- Sculpted bookshelves support redstone interactions, with comparators that can tell when a book has been added or removed from the shelf
- Using redstone, players will be able to create secret passageways on shelves and more
- The regular bookshelf remains in play
- Bamboo building blocks. Arguably the biggest addition to Minecraft 1.20 shown during Minecraft Live 2022 is a full suite of building blocks and crafting made from bamboo, bringing it in line with other woods.
- Bamboo can be used to craft like a wooden can, with unique designs for planks, stairs, doors, fences and gates
- There is also a unique bamboo mosaic block with a more decorative design
- Instead of a bamboo boat, players will be able to build a raft with a unique, flat design
- The raft still supports up to two players, as well as crates
- Features not revealed or coming. Mojang Studios has only shown off the features it is sure will arrive with Minecraft 1.20, but there are other features that either weren’t mentioned or aren’t coming with this update.
- Mojang Studios didn’t mention features like archeology or birch forest improvements
- The studio has confirmed that there is no biome update planned for 1.20
- Fireflies are still possible and discussed at Mojang Studios, but not for 1.20
- Combat parity between Minecraft: Bedrock Edition and Minecraft: Java Edition is something Mojang Studios wants to deliver, but it won’t happen in update 1.20

Mojang Studios also announced that all the features shown during Minecraft Live 2022 are closer than players expect, an exciting move that goes hand-in-hand with the studio’s new commitment to transparency and increased community involvement. The first recordings and Minecraft preview Minecraft 1.20 builds are just days away from release with the first four feature updates, giving players a chance to practice and provide feedback in record time.
Over time, the 1.20 update will likely expand with new features and content, but only when Mojang Studios is confident that the features in the store are close to completion and virtually guaranteed to make it to the finish line. In this way, Mojang Studios hopes to alleviate the frustration of long development times for Minecraft updates, while still adding plenty of new content to one of the best games from xbox. Minecraft 1.20 will be officially released for Minecraft: Bedrock Edition and Minecraft: Java Edition in 2023.
