Google’s Pixel bets big to compete with Apple and Samsung smartphones

Google’s Pixel bets big to compete with Apple and Samsung smartphones

Over the past few years, Google has made a concerted effort to overcome a perception that Pixel smartphones are not great devices. The tech giant has now revealed two Pixel phonesit’s the first ever Pixel Clock and has given a look at the Pixel Tablet that will debut next year.

Phone, Watch, Buds and more
While Apple has created a closed ecosystem of hardware and software, Google limited itself to smartphones – its laptop ‘experiment’ that was not successful – for a long time. The Pixel phones, the Watch and the Buds are all designed to work seamlessly, allowing users easy access and connectivity between multiple devices, just like Apple has done.

The Pixel Factor
The driving force behind the Pixel ecosystem is the Pixel phone. Google believes that its Android operating system, Artificial Intelligence and Tensor chips (the processor in Pixel phones) will set the stage for how well Pixel devices will perform at the same time. Android is Google’s bread and butter in software, while AI is an area where it has innovated. Tensor chips are still in their infancy—only two generations of devices have been powered by them—and it remains to be seen how well it performs.

The biggest challenge for Google is to ensure that Pixel phones become the second choice option in the world of premium Android phones. Samsung – which has a wider appeal than the Pixel – has a firm grip on the number one spot right now and offers an equally strong ecosystem of devices with smartwatches, tablets, laptops, wireless headphones and more.

For Google to have a shot at becoming the go-to option for Android users, its Pixel phones have to deliver. Currently, Pixel phones are known for their camera prowess and for offering a pure Android experience. The Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro – the two new phones from its stable – will be key in creating an ecosystem of Pixel devices to rival those of Apple and Samsung.
