IUB encourages eligible Iowans to apply for winter heating assistance

(Des Moines, IA) — The Iowa Public Utilities Board is encouraging Iowans to apply for winter heating assistance.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s 2022 fuel consumption forecast, most American households will pay more to heat their homes this winter. The outlook estimates that the increase will be as much as 28% for natural gas and 10% for electricity compared to 2021.

IUB reminds eligible Iowans that financial assistance for heating is available through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). The US Department of Health and Human Services created LIHEAP to help low-income residents pay a portion of their heating costs. IUB says more than 74,600 Iowa households received LIHEAP funds during fiscal year 2021.

Residents approved for the program are protected by Iowa law from being shut off from natural gas or electricity from November 1st through April 1st. Homes with residents over the age of 60, people with disabilities and those in crisis due to the current disconnection of utility services can apply now. Applications open to the public on November 1.

Eligibility for the program is based on a number of factors, including household size and income, housing type and fuel type.
