Jay-Z is suing Bacardi to open the books on the D’Usse partnership
Jay-Z wants to know how much money his famous cognac line is making and has filed a lawsuit against his partners at Bacardi to get that information.
In the documents he obtained TMZ Hip HopJay-Z’s company, SC Liquor, is demanding full financial clarity from Bacardi when it comes to D’Usse … the premium cognac brand in which Jay and Bacardi are 50/50 partners.
Jay and the beverage giant have co-owned D’Usse since 2011 … he regularly shouts out the brand in his songs and even once drank it at one of his Grammys to promote it. However, the lawsuit makes it clear that something about the partnership — officially called D’Usse LLC — is not right.
In the documents, Jay-Z’s co. says he needs all the books and records, the location of all the warehouses that hold D’Usse casks, bottles and accessories… as well as any information regarding Bacardi’s physical inventory and its inventory process.
It is unclear what prompted Jay to seek this information, but it is clear that there is a level of mistrust between the partners. One sentence from the documents seems quite striking: SC Liquor says it should “monitor behavior [Bacardi’s] business in order to protect the rights of SC as a partner in the company.
We’ve reached out to Jay-Z and Bacardi for comment…so far, no response.
