Latino civil rights groups sued the York County Board of Elections

Latino civil rights groups say they are suing the York County Board of Elections over failure to provide Spanish-language materials and assistance required by law. Latinostistis PRLDEF and Dechert LLP filed a complaint this week in federal district court on behalf of Casa and Puerto. Rican Voters. The groups want the board to honor its obligation to provide Spanish-language ballots, election materials and support to voters for the November 8 election. The groups are also seeking a preliminary injunction ordering the board to provide Spanish sample ballots and signage and training for polling workers on the rights of Spanish-language voters. The case would remove barriers for hundreds of Puerto Ricans eligible to vote in York County who are not fluent in English, the groups said. Under the Voting Rights Act, eligible voters not fluent in English and educated in Spanish-language schools – such as those in Puerto Rico – are entitled to receive Spanish-language election materials and assistance. CASA said it sent a letter to the election board regarding the issue before registering the complaint but received no response.
