Leaked images show Microsoft’s cunning plan to make the Surface Duo an extension of your PC
Just a few days ago we told you that Microsoft allegedly did close to rolling out Android 12L to Surface Duo and Surface Duo 2. Let’s take a step back and explain a few things. The Surface Duo and Surface Duo 2 are dual-screen phones that open up to create a tablet-sized screen. Unlike foldable phones like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, the hinge is in the middle separating the two individual screens.
Android 12L is a special version of Android developed for large screen devices and foldable devices. Given that both versions of the Surface Duo deliver a larger than 8-inch display when fully open, Android 12L is well-suited for these phones. The update includes the addition of Microsoft’s “Fluent” design language and a redesigned Settings app that uses icons borrowed from Windows 11.
Check out some of the leaked photos in this story that show what this version of Android 12L will look like on the Surface Duo and Surface Duo 2. It should also be noted that the update will include an Android 12 feature that matches the operating system’s accent color with the dominant background color that was chosen by the owner of the phone.
Microsoft has been working on making Android 12L compatible with the Surface Pro since March, and the update is expected to be released before the end of the year. As we told you in the previous article, Microsoft actually has a smart game plan here. By adding some Windows 11 design cues to Android 12L, Microsoft is trying to make the Surface Duo a mobile extension of your PC.
This is a genius marketing ploy on Microsoft’s part as it could help generate more Surface Duo sales from those who are very happy with their desktop computer and are also familiar with Android. Although Microsoft recently introduced its new Surface devices including the Surface Pro 9, we didn’t get the new Surface Duo 3 which will probably (ahem) surface by next year.
There has been some speculation that the next Surface Duo could have a completely new look and could be a true foldable phone with a design similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 4. That could be disturbing for those who prefer the current Surface Duo design. Patent application filed by Microsoft shows the phone folding inwards like the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and outwards like Huawei Mate X and Huawei Mate X3 next year.
Since then, you may have trouble finding the Surface Duo 2 Microsoft is reportedly out of stock and early last month Best Buy was told it was running out of stock. In fact, the electronics giant removed the kiosks it had set up in its stores for the Surface Duo 2 when the phone went on sale on October 21 last year with a price tag of $1,499.
