MacBooks could one day have a glass form factor with dual screens and a built-in wireless iPhone charger
Last week, the US Patent and Trademark Office published Apple’s patent application related to a possible future MacBook. At the heart of the patent application, no. 20220326777, is a laptop made of glass form. The details here seem to match or extend the Apple patent awarded in June for MacBook with two screens and a built-in wireless charger for iPhone.
According to Patently Apple (opens in new tab), the latest patent filing, Apple’s possible product would include a glass-topped MacBook interface that could be reconfigured to represent a virtual keyboard, game controller, or music/entertainment controller. The area could also serve as a reverse charging area for products such as the iPhone and Apple Watch.
New additions
Apple originally filed for this patent in 2018. In the latest filing, the company added 20 new patent claims to its invention.
Apple clearly went through each of those claims and highlighted some key points that our readers will likely appreciate the most. among these:
… and a sensor system comprising: a first sensor system configured to determine the location of a touch input applied to the upper surface of the base portion; and a second sensor system configured to determine the force of the touch input. … where the upper case is formed from one glass element. … a second screen inside the base and visible through the upper case. …the second display is configured to display an image of the keyboard in the keyboard portion of the upper case.
Patently Apple
As we noted earlier, Apple’s patent also envisions displays that use both LCD, LED, and OLED display technology, something we’ve heard rumored for future MacBooks in in 2024.
All of this (and still) sounds interesting. However, none of these advances may make it to a future Apple product.
One thing is almost certain: will be announced soon The 2022 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro models won’t look much different from the current models. Instead, they are only expected to contain updated chips.
Earlier this year, Apple introduced it M2 MacBook Air and M2 MacBook Pro (2022).
