New iPhone games to play this week: The Gardens Between, Torchlight: Infinite and more
Thousands and thousands of new games hit the App Store every day – and more are coming Apple Arcade and Netflix games also every week.
So consider this your weekly guide to what’s new the best iPhone games and very best ipad games play now. Today we have the Apple Arcade adventure The Gardens Between, the bombastic action-RPG Torchlight: Infinite and the relaxing retro puzzler Linia Stripes. Let’s get to it, shall we?
Gardens between+
We’re delighted to see this beautiful time-bending puzzle adventure rebroadcast through Apple Arcade – it got a bit lost in the crowd when it first hit the App Store in May 2019.
You control childhood best friends Arina and Frendt as they navigate through a series of whimsical island gardens. They are dotted with remnants of their shared childhood, from VCRs (ask your parents) to video game consoles.
The trick is that when you interact with certain objects you can manipulate time – so you’ll rewind said VCR player to eject a tape that can then be used as a bridge, for example. It’s neat too, and the story of separated childhood friends is subtle and well done – no endless waffle scenes for those who just want to get on with clever puzzles, the way we like it.

Torch: Infinite
Diablo Immortal players might want to check this out – it’s a similar deal: pick a character and rampage through fantasy worlds killing goons and collecting loot to become even more powerful.
And just like Diablo Immortal, Torchlight: Infinite is a mobile spin-off of the ‘main’ Torchlight games that you can play on console and PC. But it’s free and can be played on your iPhone and iPad.
Thankfully, it’s a lot brighter than Diablo’s grisly vision of Hell – instead, you tear through fantastic sci-fi-influenced worlds, with chunky characters clad in armor and vivid flashes of color. As a result, the game is much more cheerful than Blizzard’s recent efforts.
Be aware before downloading: it’s a monster of a game, 4.75GB according to our iPhone. It takes a while to download, and it also crashed once in the process – but once you get through it all, there’s a lot to see and do in this game, which has a frankly ridiculous amount of characters, upgrade paths, and abilities to discover.

Line Stripes
If you’re looking for a soothing, relaxed puzzle, then this is for you. Linia Stripes isn’t based on our parents’ 70s backgrounds, but it looks like it: the simple premise is to double-tap a jazzy pattern of lines from the one you think is the shortest to the longest to clear the screen.
After that great retro orange-brown blooms early on, the palette moves through pink-purple, yellow-green and beyond as you progress. The gentle piano tone that greets each correct move is a neat touch, as is the haptic feedback that runs through the game.
The only downside is the occasional commercial between levels, which pretty much breaks the mood like a retro jazz lounge – but you can remove them forever for just $1. That’s a price more than worth paying for a neat little casual puzzler, and will help support small Italian indie developer Nexent, the creators of the game.
