Nvidia is canceling the launch of the RTX 4080 12GB model, saying it made a product naming error.

“The RTX 4080 12GB is a fantastic graphics card, but it’s not properly named. Having two GPUs labeled 4080 is confusing,” the company wrote statement(Opens in a new window) on Friday. “So we’re hitting the ‘go’ button on the 4080 12GB.”

The decision is stunning and may be the first time Nvidia has abruptly canceled a GPU product weeks before launch. But the company seems to be taking consumer complaints seriously about the RTX 4080 12GB, which was supposed to sell for a hefty price tag of $899 and up.

Nvidia announced product alongside the RTX 4080 16GB release last month. The decision to give both GPUs the same name suggests that the only difference between them is the video memory. However, Nvidia’s own specifications and benchmarks show that the two models are very different.

For example, the 12GB model only has 7680 CUDA cores and a 192-bit memory interface, down from the 9728 CUDA cores and 256-bit interface of the 16GB model. This led many gamers to call the RTX 4080 12GB too expensive RTX 4070 disguised.

Despite the cancellation, Nvidia is continuing to launch the RTX 4080 16GB model, which will start at $1,199. In the same announcement, the company announced that the product will arrive in retail stores on November 16. “The RTX 4080 16GB is amazing and well on its way to delighting gamers everywhere,” added Nvidia.

The company also deleted mention of the RTX 4080 12GB model from its official announcement Web page(Opens in a new window). What will happen to the product units – which were probably already in mass production and possibly in product packaging – remains unclear. Nvidia did not immediately respond to a request for comment. However, the company will likely rebrand them under a different name, perhaps the RTX 4070 Ti.
