Pixel 7 and 7 Pro get free Google One VPN in December
Google launched the Pixel 7 series with two characteristics listed as “coming soon”. Free “VPN from Google One” is one aspect of the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro’s security pillar, and should arrive in December.
According to Google One supporting document“Pixel 7 and Pixel 7* Pro consumers can access VPN from Google One at no additional cost on those devices through the Google One app without a Google One subscription” in December 2022.
VPN will not be available for Pixel 7 devices sold in India or Singapore, while this article also says that “Workspace and certain supervised accounts (including child accounts) are not eligible.”
Google explains that the free offer “does not affect the price or benefits of Google One Premium plans” for those already on a 2TB+ plan. This is a simple implementation path, but a discount on the plan would be nice.
In the meantime, the fact that it won’t arrive until December remains strange given that this Pixel 7 perk appears to be the exact same VPN access that’s available today for existing subscribers in the Google One app. Hopefully there will be deeper integration similar to how Pixel devices handle Google Fi VPN. Google operator only shows status bar icon without special notification.
December is shaping up to be a big month for the Pixel with the next Feature Drop coming then Android 13 QPR1. Although the Pixel 7 adopts some aspects of QPR1 (the renaming of “screen saver mode”), it is still Android 13 (not animated Quick settings tiles, old media player cleanup tool, etc.). Meanwhile, Clear Calling is the second “coming soon” feature Google touted at launch to improve voice quality with machine learning.
