Review: Therabody’s TheraFace Pro – the at-home face massager we tested

If you love the massage that professional facialists do in the salon and the glow of your skin afterward, you may be interested to know that a new device promises to give you the same experience at home.

I tried it before and liked the original Therabody massage gun for shoulder pain caused by hunching over a laptop, as well as healing a skinny calf caused by running, so I was excited to see how it would feel on my face.

Before my trial, I knew I could choose between three levels of massage power, but I was excited to see how my middle-aged skin would react to the LED and other additions.

As I tested

I used Therabody TheraFace PRO two weeks, after ‘Lift and Firm’ YouTube video tutorial made by TheraBody.

This three-minute video has three steps to transform your skin, starting with a cleansing brush attachment, moving on to a red LED attachment, and ending with a futuristic-looking microcurrent tool.

Step One: Cleansing Ring

As the video suggested, I wet my face and applied a small amount of cleanser.

The instructions are to start at your chin and work your way up across your cheeks until your entire cheek is covered. Then go over the forehead and repeat the process from chin to cheek on the other side. Finish with the sides of the nose and upper lip area.

By massaging the cleanser into my face like this, it felt like an even amount was applied to my entire face rather than the usual rubbing with my fingers. I actually noticed a cleaner feeling as soon as I dried my face, especially in the forehead area which is often prone to excess oil.

Second step: LED Ring Light Red light therapy

This was my favorite part of the treatment. I feel comfortable with the LED lights, as I have previously tried the treatment in the salon with excellent results.

As it is TheraFace PRO the device is lightweight, easy to methodically apply, and will automatically work when placed half an inch from the face. You can tell by the light that it’s in the right place, and if it’s not in the right place, then there’s no color.

At first I followed a YouTube video to make sure I was going in the right direction, but after a week I knew exactly what to do.

After two weeks I noticed a slight reduction in the lines around my eyes and I’m excited to see how that continues with a few more weeks of use.

Step Three: Microcurrent Ring:

Let’s be honest, this tool looks a little scary. Plus, the fact that you need to apply TheraOne Conductive Gel for it to work shows that it’s going to do something powerful.

This can either put you off out of fear or get you excited to try something that was previously unattainable in a home appliance. After a few deep breaths, I went the other way and I’m so glad I did because it was less painful than I had initially, wrongly, feared.

In fact, there is no pain when using a microcurrent attachment on a Theraface PRO. It actually feels good as you coax your skin to defy gravity. Go up and keep moving up and you’ll find things tightening in places you didn’t know it was possible to tighten. After a week of using it, my husband asked if I had a haircut, which is his code for something that looks good on you, but I don’t know what.

Verdict

The Therabody has an LED attachment that offers blue light therapy to reduce mild to moderate acne and breakouts.

For a tool that can perform eight salon-effective treatments in one device, this is good value for money. While $399 is an investment, it’s worth spending money on your face because it can help slow aging and make you like what you see in the mirror more. And if it reduces your need for salon facials, you’ll soon recoup the cost of the device.

After just three weeks, my skin is softer, looks smoother and has much more color. Even better, some crow’s feet around my eyes look less noticeable.
