It seems like there’s little room for surprise left in the industry these days – and not just because of all the leaks. Like Google with its Pixel line, nothing has shied away from the standard model of revealing products in a jiffy. Instead, it has been taken to shape its own news cycle through slow, official teasers. With its third and latest device, the company gave us practically everything except the date and the price.

This morning, founder Carl Pei officially unveiled the product. to like, officially, officially. With the arrival of Nothing Year (Stick), the company is returning to the foundation laid by its first product last summer nothing ears (1), The two immediately obvious distinctions here are the new “lipstick-style” cases that give the product its original look and move to a “half-in-ear” design compared to the silicone tips of its predecessors.

(stick) is not replacing (1), mind you. Instead the pitch is focused on those who prefer a more traditional design, a la AirPods vs AirPods Pro. I’m not one of them, but don’t blame you if you are. Everyone’s body is different. The company says the design was “tested on over 100 people.” Otherwise, the buds (stems, in fact) look more or less like the other product. Certainly no complaints there.

The Year (1) promised battery life of 24/34 hours, all said to be based on active noise cancellation and other usage. (the stick) is rated at 29 hours with the case and the big caveat that active noise cancellation isn’t an option here (like the standard AirPods). Still, if they can mimic the sound of (1) with their 12.6mm driver, you can pretty easily justify the $99 ($149 CAD) price tag.

On that note, Pei noted on Twitter last week that the price of (1) had coincidentally increased from $99 to $149, due to “a cost increase.” Certainly the cost of producing equipment on a large scale has risen recently, thanks to supply chains being shortest and inflationary. The founder said the company has sold “approximately” 600,000 pairs of its first product.

(Stick) went on sale on 4 November in 40 countries, including the US, UK and Canada. they will also be available on Nothing is the first store in LondonNaturally.
