Valley Opportunity Council opens fuel support center in Springfield
SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) – The Valley Opportunity Council, known for its dedication to ending poverty for low- and middle-income people, now has a new location to provide fuel support.
VOC employees held a ribbon cutting ceremony Monday at the new Springfield location at 555 State Street. Springfield Mayor Dominic Sarno and Representatives Carlos Gonzalez, Orlando Ramos and Bud Williams were also in attendance for today’s grand opening.
The new location joins a group of VOC fuel assistance stops in western Massachusetts that seek to help income-eligible residents obtain energy assistance for the coming winter season. VOC Executive Director Stephen Huntley said the energy needs in Springfield and throughout Hampden County are substantial
“Oil peaked at $6 a gallon a few weeks ago. It’s volatile. People’s heating costs are volatile and uncertain and are going to be far more expensive than they have been in the past several years. We expect a lot of people to see our Ways will come and we will have the ability to help them,” Huntley explained.
VOC is now accepting applications at the new location. People in the Springfield area who need this assistance can stop by Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
