Wear OS app hits 50 million downloads after Pixel Watch drops it

The official “Wear OS” app has hit a new download milestone on the Play Store just as the Pixel Watch and other recent smartwatches are making it irrelevant.

Both as a minor indicator of an app’s legitimacy and as a fun indicator of high scores, the Google Play Store shows how many times an app has been downloaded to an Android device. Instead of offering an exact number, the Play Store shows the number of downloads of each app through milestones like 1,000, 5,000, and 10,000.

Over the weekend, Google’s official Wear OS watch app — formally “Wear OS by Google Smartwatch” — reached a new milestone, amassing 50 million downloads since its initial release in June 2014. From the time of that original launch until the release of the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4, every smartwatch running Android Wear or Wear OS should have been set with this dedicated companion applications.

That all changed with the release of Wear OS 3-based watches, such as the Galaxy Watch 4, Montblanc Summit 3and Google’s own Pixel Watch. Instead, each of those watches requires its own dedicated companion app, a new requirement with Wear OS 3.

The new irrelevance of the Wear OS app makes the milestone for this latest Play Store takeover — just days after the Pixel Watch’s launch — all the more interesting. However, it’s possible that these Wear OS 3 watches are still contributing to the download numbers in their own way.

Each of the older “Wear OS 2” smartwatches relied on the wearable version of this Wear OS app to provide certain features and updates. For example, when The tiles are added first platform, they did so via an update to this same watch app. Our APK Insight team has noticed that the Pixel Watch has its own unique version of this Wear OS app, though we’re not sure what role it plays at the moment.

Still, it’s fun to see the original Android Wear and Wear OS app get its last moment in the spotlight before it becomes completely irrelevant. Even the most prolific Wear OS watchmaker, Fossil, has one today upgrade started some of its recent models on Wear OS 3, ditching Google’s companion app for one of its own.
