Why this doctor says everyone should have an Apple Watch
The Apple Watch is credited with saving the life of a doctor who fell from the side of his house while washing. He tells his story to NBC ChicagoDr. Thomas Fischow not only credits the Apple Watch Series 5 with saving his life, but also explains why he tells all of his patients that they need to wear the Apple Watch…
Dr. Vicho was wearing his Apple Watch Series 5 while washing bricks on the side of his house. To get to the top, he decided to use a window covering as a step. But as soon as he stepped on it, the cover slipped and he “sinked five feet downstairs well on the way out” and lost consciousness.
After the fall, the Apple Watch rolled out fall detection and called emergency services on behalf of Dr. Vicho.
After three to five minutes, Vicho said he managed to get out of the well by himself. When he did, there was a police officer from Glenview standing in his garden. The officer asked him if he was okay or needed a paramedic. “No,” said Vicho, but asked the officer how he knew the internist needed help. The officer pointed at Ficho’s watch.
“I was really surprised,” Vicho said. “I didn’t assemble it right away that my watch would.”
Fall detection first came to the Apple Watch with the Series 4. It is capable of detecting your fall and asking if you are OK. If it sees that you are not responding for 1 minute, it will automatically call emergency services and share your current location. The feature is disabled by default for users under 65, but here’s how to do it Enable it manually.
Dr. Vishu’s advice to everyone
In his clinic, Dr. Vicho says most of his patients are older, many over 60. Because of this, he says he tells them all that they need to Apple Watch on their wrist whenever possible.
“The majority of my patients are adults and a lot of them are over 60. I have told every single one of them they need to have one of these hours. I don’t even work in Apple infrastructure, I work in PC infrastructure. I am not a crazy person Apple. This was an amazing event for me. It was unbelievable.”
He recounted one case in which an Apple Watch could have helped save the life of one of his patients:
He remembers a patient who got out of the shower, fell into her bath, broke her hip and couldn’t get up. Her body was found three days later.
“All you need is a watch,” Vicho said, wishing the technology was there at the time.
