With no first- or second-round pick in 2023, John Lynch needed to give his scouts an impassioned talk.
The “people they choose” approach has many consequences. Among other things, it probably makes the scouting efforts on the team less important.
On Friday, 49ers GM John Lynch suggested that trading away from the early picks makes the scouts’ work more important to the cause.
“After training today, we’re going to zoom in with all the scouts in college, and this morning we’re just trying to predict, are they excited, are they upset because here they go all their buddies,” Lynch told reporters. “My message would be, ‘This is all the more reason we have to make these choices important. We are fortunate because there are a few different ways, minority coaches who have brought us some choices. I think that makes it possible for you to do something like that because you have a pair of them’ [compensatory] trilogy, and you’ll get more in the future with things like that. But in the end, you weigh it all and because of our belief in our team and what we feel we can do and what [Christian McCaffrey] For us as a football team, you’re trying to make a move like that, and make our way.”
The 49ers received a pair of compensatory enlistment picks in the third round in 2023, as a result of hiring Robert Saleh in 2020 to train jets and Martin Mayhew to be general manager of leaders and Dolphins’ hiring of Mike McDaniel in 2022. (The appointments of Saleh and Mayhew in the same round led to a third-round selection in 2021, 2022 and 2023). Free agent net loss result earlier this year.
But the first round disappeared thanks Tree Lance trade. And the second-round pick (along with the third-round pick and fourth-round pick) was sent to Carolina for McCaffrey.
It’s a far cry from Ricky Williams’s draft of Mike Ditka in 1999, when the Saints sent out a full slate of picks to trade for a Texas comeback. The 49ers will still have work to do this weekend. And the low stock of choices will make it all the more important that every lottery ticket they scratch becomes a winner.
