YouTube adds some very neat widgets to the iPhone home screen

YouTube is Google’s latest home screen widget app for iPhone and iPad, and one in particular provides very handy shortcuts.

“Quick Actions” measure 4×2 and are billed as “the fastest way to search and browse YouTube.” There’s a “Search YouTube” box at the top that immediately launches that UI with an open keyboard, while a microphone icon launches voice search.

Then you have “Home”, “Shorts” and “Subscriptions” to immediately open those respective feeds. This widget uses outline style icons that appear in the bottom bar. The last shortcut is pretty handy, while the middle one reflects YouTube’s huge short-form video focus.

There is also a 2×2 “Search” widget that also has a black or white background (based on the system theme) and only allows for quick text input.

YouTube for iPhone and iPad new home screen widgets have been rolling out over the past two weeks and we’re seeing them go live with version 17.40.5 today. As always, be sure to open the app first after updating before long-pressing the home screen and launching the widget picker from the top-left corner.

The last major iOS widget drop by Google was in early 2022 Inbox from GmailXL iPad options from Drive and translate shortcuts. Meanwhile, the company completed the rollout earlier this week six lock screen widgets.
