Organizations must address growing business needs by deploying applications and devices across locations, including branch offices, third-party manufacturing sites, power plants, emergency response sites, and acute care facilities. Even with SaaS-based applications in the cloud, organizations still need hardware, and typically outsource services to MSPs and MSSPs that can manage the SLA and operational challenges presented by this physical stack. These providers need a simple platform to host third-party applications, enable remote work and ensure security. The Mini SR solves this problem.

About the size of an iPhone, this cloud-managed out-of-band gateway ticks a number of boxes. Mini SR provides wired and wireless connectivity, hosts third-party security applications and mission-critical tools, and provides centralized orchestration in the cloud. Its rugged fanless design can be stowed away and extends management capabilities via physical Gigabit Ethernet and USB interfaces, offering remote access via ZPE Cloud™.

Mini SR is ideal for SMEs/MSSPs and for the following use cases:

  1. Out-of-band edge rack management with support for environmental sensors
  2. SASE/SSE on ramp for Palo Alto Networks Netskope, Prisma Access and Zscaler connectors
  3. A secure IoT/OT gateway with easy cloud orchestration
  4. Secure access to work from anywhere (home, car, temporary office)
  5. Police/Emergency Response (Vehicle Computer Router)
  6. SCADA industrial OT/IoT zero-trust, pico segmentation gateway
  7. Cloaking medical and industrial devices to prevent detection and exploitation during hacker reconnaissance scans
  8. SaaS applications that require a box to host vulnerability scanning agents, experience monitoring, and critical DDI (DHCP/DNS/IPAM) services

Mini SR was designed after collaboration with industrial technology giants, who needed a secure resilience solution for their large IoT and OT infrastructures during the pandemic. This compact gateway connects, controls and isolates critical assets through out-of-band (OOB) management. This secure path uses the Mini SR’s Wi-Fi, LTE, or Ethernet connections to establish tunnels or connections to untrusted destinations, keeping management traffic separate and secure.

Joe Quenneville, CEO of security services provider CyberGRC, says, “The Mini SR is perfect for managing remote manufacturing equipment, SCADA systems, medical imaging devices and even oil and gas equipment sensors. It allows my IT team to tap into their distributed systems without having to be physically on site.”

Matt Robinson, CTO of Rahi, says, “Mini SR makes life easier for SMBs and VARs who manage remote branch offices or industrial sites. It provides practical visibility into the environment for rapid troubleshooting and recovery without the need for on-site resources. Out-of-band mini-SRs and hosted tools allow teams to remotely re-engineer an entire infrastructure, effectively using smart-hand resources. We anticipate savings ranging from $600 to $4,000 per smart ticket incident.”

Koroush Saraf, VP of Marketing and Product Management at ZPE Systems, explains, “Anyone considering a Raspberry Pi or an Intel NUC should consider the Mini SR instead. Many IT and SaaS use cases require a physical device on premises to act as a hosting platform or cloud gateway, and this device needs to be regularly updated with the latest patches. The entire Nodegrid SR fleet, including the Mini SR, can be upgraded and orchestrated from the ZPE Cloud just as iPhone users receive updates from the App Store. The Mini SR connects to the ZPE Cloud via out-of-band networks to keep its OS and guest applications up to date.”

The Mini SR uses an Intel ® x86 CPU and is pre-installed with Nodegrid OS™, which combines secure out-of-band cloud management and an open platform with the ability to run on-demand VMs, Docker containers and LXC applications. The device also supports Nodegrid environmental sensors and sends data Nodegrid Data Lake™ for analytics. These integrations increase uptime by providing insight into infrastructure heat, moisture, dust, device tampering, user experience and hidden machine log data. In addition, the SR family includes an encrypted drive and secure boot to prevent tampering and detection and prevention of supply chain risks. Organizations can now reduce downtime by 50% or more, predictably configure and scale sites in hours, and keep edge users connected without interruption.
