Apple adds a new supplier of iPhone 14 Pro screens together with Samsung
LG has started supplying Apple with OLED displays for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, according to Korea ETNews. It’s unclear how many orders LG will split with Samsung, which has been the exclusive supplier of screens for these devices so far.
Diversification of suppliers reduces risk and is likely to allow Apple to negotiate lower costs in the future, as LG and Samsung compete for orders.
It’s not clear when Apple will start shipping iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models with LG screens, but it’s unlikely that customers will be able to notice the difference between models with LG and Samsung screens. Apple has routinely relied on multiple suppliers for some other iPhone components, from storage to batteries.
iPhone 14 Pro screens use ProMotion’s low-power LTPO technology, allowing for a variable refresh rate between 10Hz and 120Hz. The display can also drop to very low power of 1 Hz when in the optional always-on display mode.
The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus screens are said to be supplied by Samsung and China’s BOE.
