Desk 27 integrates Google conference call technology with a single device

The Desk 27 rests on a tabletop and can also serve as a monitor and dock for a laptop, while the Board 65 – the other variation in the series – is standalone like a whiteboard.

The Desk 27 comes in two colors, charcoal and chalk. It has a five-megapixel camera and a 10-inch touchscreen controller, which is familiar to those who already use Google’s conferencing technology.

Aruliden said having as few wires as possible was an important aspect of the design, and the system was designed with a power-over-Ethernet cable that provides an Internet connection and power with a single input.

The system also features an integrated soundbar with dual four-microphone arrays. The hardware runs Google’s TrueVoice sound system, which the company says uses AI to reduce background noise and make speech clearer.

“This means that distracting sounds, such as snorting at the keyboard or typing, are removed, but the voices are quite clear,” Aruliden said.

The sound bar can process up to 44 different channels simultaneously, enables large conference calls and includes options for closed captioning and headphone usage.

“The Desk 27’s sculptural shape makes it approachable, while its subtle surface texture and matte finish allow it to blend into any environment,” Aruliden said. “The tiltable desk stand also enables users to view the screen whether sitting or standing.”

Through the Jamboard application, the screen can also function as a whiteboard, with a small docking station for a digital stylus at the bottom of the screen.

Aruliden also said that while the device was built to work best with Google Meet, any conferencing software can be used on the device.

According to the team, recycled materials were also used for the design. The polycarbonate-and-ABS housings use “after consumer recycled materials,” Aruliden said, adding that the fabric covers contain recycled polyester and nylon.
