Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio trailer reimagines the classic

It may seem Pinocchio is a timeless fairy tale that has stayed with us forever, but it is a relatively recent story written by Italian author Carlo Collodi in 1883. Collodi’s original novel was much darker than the two Disney adaptations, including which was released earlier this year. There is also a great deal of darkness in director Guillermo del Toro’s movie about the classic story of a doll who wants to be human. And as you can see in the trailer below, Pinocchio from Guillermo del Toro It also embraces a bit of whimsy and pathos that Disney movies lack.

One of the major changes is that the place was moved to Italy in the 1930s, under the fascist rule of Benito Mussolini. In addition, the stop-motion animation gave Pinocchio a doll-like appearance even when surrounded by other stylized characters. There is also an inherent tragedy in Geppetto losing his only son prior to Pinocchio’s creation. But if Geppetto hopes for a kind and obedient child, Pinocchio will let him down. He just doesn’t know how to act.

This is where Sebastian J. Cricket (Ewan McGregor) comes in. He’s been tasked with keeping Pinocchio straight and tight, and that’s no easy feat! This kid is just a magnet for trouble, and it might cost Pinocchio his best chance of becoming a real boy.

Gregory Mann stars in the film as the voice of Pinocchio, with David Bradley as Mr. Geppetto, Christoph Waltz as Count Volpe, Tilda Swinton as Wood Elf, Ron Perlman as Podesta, Finn Wolfhard as Candlewick, and Cate Blanchett as Spazzatura , and Burn Gorman as a priest.

Netflix will premiere Pinocchio from Guillermo del Toro On the 9th of December.
