More customers choose iPhones with higher storage capacity
Consumer Intelligence Research Partners, also known as CIRPa new market research report this week with data on iPhone sales between late September and early October 2022. The data, covering the first three weeks of iPhone 14 sales, shows that more customers chose iPhone models with higher storage capacity in the United States.
The report is based on a field survey conducted in the United States after the end of Apple’s fourth fiscal quarter. In this period, iPhone 14 models accounted for 21% of iPhone sales. The iPhone 14 Plus was not included in the survey because it was launched later. CIRP notes that in the same period last year, iPhone 13 models accounted for 16% of total US sales.
Even with the launch of the iPhone 14, the 13 models are still selling well — at least most of them. For example, the regular iPhone 13 alone took 15% of sales. Unsurprisingly, the iPhone 13 mini is the least popular of the bunch, owning just 4% of sales. The iPhone 12 mini fared worse with only 1% of sales. (The phone is now turned off.)
The three-year-old iPhone 11, which is still in Apple’s lineup, had an impressive 9% in the latest survey, showing that there are still a large number of customers interested in buying older iPhone models at lower prices. This makes the iPhone 11 more popular than the entry-level iPhone SE, which accounts for 7% of sales.
The iPhone mini’s continued disappointing results explain its retirement of the iPhone 14 model year. The iPhone 12 mini and 13 mini combined account for 5% of iPhone sales, while the higher-priced iPhone SE, with its retro design, accounts for 7% of new iPhones sold. It was sold a quarter in the United States.
Customers want iPhones with more storage
But more than just showing off the best-selling iPhone models, CIRP also asked buyers what storage capacity to choose. This time around, the research firm indicated that more people opted for the larger capacity models.
For example, 60% of iPhone 13 Pro buyers chose the 128GB model in 2021. This year, 50% of consumers chose the version with 256GB of internal storage. CIRP says that for iPhone 14 models, “the majority of customers paid a premium for phones with more storage.”
Research attributes the high demand for high-capacity iPhone models to camera upgrades, which lead to an increase in the size of photo and video files. For example, a One 48MP ProRAW photo Capturing it with iPhone 14 Pro can result in a file of 75MB. It is worth noting that the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max are available in configurations with up to 1 TB of storage.
