Nintendo highlights environmental benefits of new Switch packaging

Much of the stats in Nintendo’s latest financial report have covered how well the company is doing in business, but just as important is what it’s doing to combat climate change and its negative environmental impact. Fortunately, the follow-up view outlined the steps the company is taking in this area, particularly in terms of power usage in its consoles and reductions in non-essential packaging.

The first of these points is less about what Nintendo is Going To resist its energy consumption, and more about what it is has it before on this front. The presentation notes how the Switch has consistently reduced power usage since its release in 2017. While the original console released all those years ago would use (on average) 12 watts when docked, the current model only uses 7 watts. The OLED is more efficient at 6 watts.

Of course, these numbers are only an estimate and power consumption will vary depending on the program and conditions of use. However, moving towards a console with low environmental impact is always a plus.

The report also confirms Nintendo’s plans to make Switch boxes 18% smaller (more in line with OLED packaging) by the end of 2022. This proposal has been revealed Back in August, though emphasizing its proactive activity in combating supply issues at the time (something Nintendo still has to navigate today). It makes sense – smaller boxes = more space to pack them for worldwide distribution. But there are also environmental repercussions for this, as fewer trains, planes, and boats are needed to get products out into the world. This reduces the impact of console distribution And the Smaller funds reduce waste in the long run – which is mutually beneficial.

Nintendo’s environmental considerations may not be the most drastic policies we’ve ever heard – well, one of them has already been introduced – but seeing any big company looking to help with climate change is always refreshing. We hope this inspires more noteworthy changes in the future.
