The Embracer Group, a Swedish video game and media company, appears to be shutting down Onoma after only months acquisition. Onoma, formerly known as Square Enix Montreal, has been acquired along with the entirety of Former Western Square Enix holdings Back in August this year. The studio subsequently changed its name to Onoma, but Embracer appears to have other plans for the studio.
according to IGNThe move is likely to be a cost-cutting measure, and the company has told employees that some employees will be moved to sister studio, Eidos Montreal, which it has acquired along with Onoma, and San Francisco-based Crystal Dynamics. Prior to its acquisition, the trio was known for releasing some of the best hits in gaming history, including some franchises that were completely unknown to younger generations of gamers but are fond memories of an older gaming audience.
Onoma’s closing is somewhat unusual due to its timing. The company previously announced a rebranding and a brand new game in development, which has now been canceled or moved to Eidos Montreal along with some Onoma employees. The studio is best known for its work on the popular Gomobile game series, which included Hitman Gu, Lara Croft Gu, And the Ex god go – which was originally developed by Square Enix, Crystal Dynamics, and Eidos Interactive, respectively, for other gaming platforms.

In addition, cost-cutting measures are not limited to only reported Onoma closures. Other than the aforementioned Onoma shutdown, Embracer has also shut down the publication’s QA department, and the entire move affected nearly 200 people – some of whom will only be ported to Eidos Montreal on PC and console projects. Embracer appears to have no plans to tackle the mobile market, at least not with the Onoma offering, which is admittedly lacking compared to other mobile versions in the current mobile gaming market.
The Embracer Group’s acquisition of the aforementioned studios has revealed some interesting details regarding Square Enix’s business. The reason for selling the company is still unknown Tomb rider, privilege with More than 88 million lifetime salesfor Peanuts, but seems eager to shed some of his IP addresses and have a cash back in the process.
