A sketchy new rumor says that Apple originally planned a new version of the Apple Pencil for release this year. According to a post on WeiboApple scrapped plans for a new $50 version of the Apple Pencil at the last minute, despite the fact that it had already gone into mass production.

Apple Pencil plans canceled by Apple
The post, which was shared on Twitter by Duan Rui, comes from a source with very little history and should therefore be treated with considerable skepticism. However, the claims made are interesting and worth considering.
The source says Apple had a new Apple Pencil in the works, codenamed “Marker,” which it was planning to unveil at its September event. Apple was reportedly targeting a price of around $49 for this accessory, making it significantly cheaper than the first-generation Apple Pencil and Apple Pencil 2.
Given that lower price, there were reportedly some compromises. Namely, this Apple Pencil apparently didn’t have pressure-sensing technology or a battery inside. Instead of a rechargeable battery, Apple had apparently developed a chip that would be used to power the stylus through the screen. This is similar to what Samsung has done with the S-Pen stylus.
Where things get interesting is that this Apple Pencil also apparently it worked with the iPhone. The first-generation Apple Pencil and Apple Pencil 2 don’t work with the iPhone, and it’s an idea that Apple has rebuked in the past. However, this is a rumor having did to rotates several times.
It’s unclear why Apple scrapped plans for this “Marker” version of the Apple Pencil, but the decision was reportedly made at the last minute. According to today’s report, Apple had already produced over 1 million units, which is not an insignificant amount for an accessory that was likely to be one-of-a-kind.
Where this cheaper Apple Pencil would make sense is with the latest 10th generation iPad. Apple has faced enough criticism due to the fact that the iPad 10 has a USB-C port, but it still only works with the first-generation Lightning-equipped Apple Pencil. That means you have to use a $9 dongle (sold separately) to pair the Apple Pencil with your iPad and charge it.
