Vancouver’s fancy flight overruns the runway in Ontario

Vancouver couple Charissa Landicho and Mac Bradley just wanted a quick and cheap getaway, but a bumpy landing wasn’t in their itinerary.

“I was definitely shocked because it was a night flight. I woke up just like, ‘What’s going on?'” Landicho said.

“We touched down and we heard a loud bang. And it went up and went down again,” he recalled.

It was a terrifying experience for the 134 passengers on board the Flair Airlines Boeing 737 that skidded off the runway in southern Ontario just before 6:30 a.m. Friday morning.

The flight from Vancouver was landing at Kitchener-Waterloo Airport when it overshot the runway and ended up on the grass.

“For me, I thought we got it right and then, you know, the next thing, we’re off the tarmac, pretty much on the field, going around, going around,” Bradley said.

“We probably went 50 to 100 meters off the runway,” he continued.

He said their plane tickets cost about $100 one-way, and he would save hundreds by going with a budget airline.

With no announcement or warning, the couple said they stood still and waited an hour before finally getting off the plane.

“It was a little iffy, it seemed like nobody really knew what to do on the plane other than try to stay calm. So it was a little nerve-wracking,” Bradley said.

“And the fact that we just got an automated text after asking to leave a Google review about our experience was a bit satirical,” he added.

In a statement, Flair Airlines said there were no injuries and passengers were taken to the terminal by bus.

There is no word on what caused the plane to overshoot the runway, but the Transport Safety Board (TSB) has been launched to investigate.
