Volkswagen: Unique in its category: New ID. Buzz impresses with innovative driver assistance systems

If the turn signal lever is tapped briefly, the vehicle may make an auxiliary lane change on the motorway. It can use Swarm data or even learn a recurring parking maneuver: Volkswagen ID. buzz01 Being introduced with a new intelligent assist system that can make driving even more convenient and also enhance safety. This is in line with Volkswagen’s commitment to making the latest technologies quickly accessible to a broad customer base.

“At ID. Buzz, iconic design meets innovative technology, and this is reflected in new convenience and assistance systems. We are taking the next step on the path of highly automated driving with the use of Swarm data in the latest Travel Assist, “This is in line with Volkswagen’s commitment to offering premium technology and innovations in as many models as possible,” explains Kai Grunitz, a member of the Volkswagen Brand Board of Management responsible for development.

Optional Travel Assist can keep the vehicle in the lane, maintain distance from the vehicle in front and also ensure that the vehicle remains at the maximum speed set by the driver. Among other things, it uses the adaptive lane guidance system for this. This system actively keeps the vehicle in the middle of its lane. Travel Assist adapts itself to the driver’s driving style and can steer the vehicle further left or right in the lane rather than in the middle. Travel assist also comes with predictive cruise control and cornering assist function. Here, the vehicle speed can be adapted to the valid speed limit and the course of the road (inclines, roundabouts, etc.).

New travel assistance features. If anonymized Swarm data from other Volkswagen models is available, Travel Assist with Swarm data can only use a marked road lane marking to place the vehicle in the lane. In this case, for example, the assistance system is also available on country roads without central lane marking. The availability of Travel Assist is further enhanced by the swarm data, improved comfort and level of customer support.

Travel Assistance with Assisted Lane Change

Data swarm from the fleet. With the use of Swarm data, Volkswagen is taking the next step towards highly automated driving. Unknown Swarm data is generated by several million Volkswagen Group vehicles. To this end, the vehicle fleet also collects map material with specific features from the vehicle’s vicinity – such as marker lines and road signs – and automatically transmits this information to the cloud. From there, individually customized data is sent to the participating Volkswagen models that are currently driving along the respective road segments. The database is growing all the time thanks to the large number of participating vehicles.

Assisted lane changes at 90 km/h. When driving at speeds in excess of 90 km/h on a motorway, Travel Assist with Swarm data can actively support lane changes if this is desired by the driver. When activated, the lane change can be initiated and performed by tapping the turn signal. To complete operation, the sensor must not detect any objects around the vehicle and the capacitive steering wheel must be able to detect the driver’s hands. Id. Buzz then automatically moves into the desired lane. The driver is able to maneuver and maneuver at any time.
