Volvo unveils EX90 electric SUV, ‘safest vehicle ever’

Today at a global live event in Sweden, Volvo Cars officially unveiled its next EX90 SUV, sharing the many safety features, advanced technologies and sustainable materials that come together in this tailor-made electric vehicle. Volvo They also teased a second model coming next year, but more on that later. There’s a lot to explore here, so let’s dig deeper.

We started covering the Volvo EX90 back in September when the automaker started teasing it capabilities of the next SUV As “Invisible Security Shield”. As the successor to the super popular XC90Volvo has revealed that this new bespoke SUV marks the start of a new generation of vehicles for the brand, aiming to offer an all-electric range by 2030 and become carbon-neutral a decade later.

Volvo promised that the EX90 would come with a host of safety features and in-house designed technology, in addition to other components from trusted companies like Google and NVIDIA. What first drew us to learn more about the EX90 are the LiDAR sensors embedded in its exterior, again rather than selling the standard to potential customers.

At the beginning of October, we learned that the EX90 would arrive as Volvo’s first vehicle with bi-directional charging capabilitiesit’s part of the company’s soon-to-be-offered holistic energy management system to help consumers use their vehicle to ease grid dependency and ensure backup power in emergencies.

The EX90 shows Volvo’s future as an electric brand

There is a lot of detail in both press releases From Volvo, but we recommend watching the video presented below to get the full picture, because the automaker is packing a LOT of new stuff inside this electric SUV.

Unlike Volvo’s previous EVs, which were essentially combustion models converted for the electric age, the EX90 will arrive as an entirely new breed of EV for the brand: software defined, sustainable and safe for family lifestyles. It sits on a completely custom platform with new electric motors, inverters and battery management systems.

The company’s CEO, Jim Rowan, explained that the EX90 demonstrates what the Volvo will replace in the future in relation to safety, technology, sustainability and design. Speaking of design, let’s start with that exterior.

In addition to being sleeker and simpler to look at than previous models, the EX90 has two key features worth noting. The first is its Luminar LiDAR system, which is set front and center on the roofline above the windshield (pictured above). The system is able to see 250 meters ahead in total darkness. LiDAR is also supported by 16 ultrasonic sensors, 8 cameras and 5 radar systems, all standard.

By ditching the front grille because it was outdated, Volvo wanted to make sure the face of its future models was still recognizable, hence where the new headlights fit in. These high definition 1.3 megapixel lights open from the hammer shape for daylight driving. to more powerful night lamps.

The Volvo team said it also offers an anthropomorphism to the EX90’s face, as a kind of gesture or eye-opening gesture. New lighting features have also arrived inside, so let’s move inside.

Bright wood interior and more safety features

Inside the cabin, future EX90 owners will find evidence of Volvo’s aforementioned attention to safety, durability and design. The materials in the carpets, seats and headliners come from recycled materials, while offering a quality look. During the day, the dashboard and doors feature Scandinavian wood, but as the sun goes down, the interior lights up – an all-new Volvo design feature that will debut in the EX90.

The EX90’s dashboard features a 14.5-inch center display with built-in Google and 5G connectivity, along with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and wireless capabilities. over-the-air updates.   • Up to 600 km (~373 mi) range on a single charge (WLTP standards)
  • It can be charged 10-80% in less than 30 minutes
  • The dual-motor version will be powered by a 111 kWh battery to boot
    • 517 hp (380 kW) and a torque of 910 Nm
  • Two-way charging capabilities including Plug & Charge
