Water Assistance Program Helps Pay Water Bills Throughout Panhandle
AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) — Many people in the state of Texas go without water, unable to wash dishes or find clean drinking water.
Panhandle Community Services (PCS) has a program to help low-income households with water services called the Low-Income Housing Water Program (LIHWAP).
“This is the first of its kind. We receive about 75 calls a day from people seeking help just for water bills. The difficulties are true and real families are still hurt and still trying to overcome the tough times. are,” said Christina Kristen, director of energy support at PCS.
The Water Program is a temporary, federally funded program that helps low-income families stop having to turn off their water and pay their bills.
“This is mainly only for those houses which were already closed or were on the verge of closure. We’re excited to extend this service to families who still have some rough times and are also paying that current utility bill, especially with the holidays. It’s not just about spending money, it’s about the lives that influence us to help them maintain their daily lives,” Kristen said.
Cities included in the panhandle are currently Borger, Bovina, Canyon, Claude, Dumas, Farwell, Frich, Groom, Hart, McLean, Sandford, Shamrock, Skellytown, Stinet, Sunray Tulia, Wheeler, Whitedeer and Silverton.
