Windows 11 on Surface Duo 2 has become a reality for those who are bold enough
What you need to know
- Developer Gustave Monce has released the initial package to install Windows 11 on Surface Duo 2.
- Monce previously released Tools to get Windows 11 on the original Surface Duo, which now mostly works.
- It’s still incredibly early to release with only one SoC running and no touch support yet for dual screens.
- The entire project can be viewed on GitHub
You should give it up for those who bravely tinker with expensive hardware to power it A program that was not intended for him. This is the case with Microsoft Surface Duo 2his dual-screen Android smartphone, which got some early tools to make it fully functional Windows 11 The operating system.
Gustave Muncie, also known as @gus33000 on Twitterreleased version 2211.16 of its Surface Duo 2 drivers. The whole project Posted on Github Including directions on how to make it all work – it’s not for the faint of heart.
This project is one a little Monce works with the Surface Duo series. Since both devices are powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon processors, getting Windows 11 on ARM to run on them is feasible. The problem arises with all other devices like sensors, cameras, touch screens, cell phones, GPS, etc, which require drivers and lots of testing.
Muncie notes that this is just version 1 of the project, and while it’s still very early days, “there are also some pretty cool things working.” on github Project Status Page, you can see that the left display panel, thermal sensors, hood hall sensor, Modern Standby, USB C, buttons, and charger are all working. While the processor is running (obviously), only one Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 core runs out of eight.
As for what doesn’t work, well, it’s a lot. Cell phone (calls, data, texts, LTE), GPS, touch, digital stylus, Wi-Fi, vibration motor, Bluetooth, camera, NFC, and more are all in the list. As such, Windows 11 on the Surface Duo 2 isn’t even close to being a usable OS for everyday use.
Monce also points out some serious installation warnings that you should be aware of:
- You will have to backup your data, as the installation process erases it.
- You will lose NFC payments with unlocked bootloader.
- It’s not really ready for you to use outside (no touch, etc).
- There is no warranty of any kind.
This last part is crucial because if you get your Surface Duo 2 in an unusable condition, there’s little to no official support. However, Monce is more than willing to help anyone who encounters issues via their Telegram or Twitter channel.
Getting Windows 11 on the Surface Duo 2 is a bit ridiculous. As we have noted in the history The original Surface DuoMicrosoft meant to run these devices for a new version of Windows It is internally called “Andromeda OS”. This project, however, collapsed due to a loss of landmarks. But instead of scrapping all hardware development, Microsoft decided to put Android 11 on it with Google’s blessing.
While the Surface Duo wasn’t intended to fully run Windows 11, like this project, it’s still fun to see in action, even at this early stage. Questions remain about whether this device is practical for everyday use due to the small screens, but it shows you how versatile Windows is.
