Your iPhone is vulnerable to malware attacks even when it’s turned off – Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL)

Apple company AAPL Iphone It is not immune to malware attacks when it is turned off, according to researchers at Technical University DarmstadtGermany said in a research paper titled “Evil never sleeps.”

A new type of malware developed by researchers at the university can spread to an iPhone.

Even with a user-initiated shutdown, the iPhone can be located via the “Find My” network, and when the battery runs low, the device goes into power reserve mode but users can still access credit cards, student passes and other items in their wallets, the researchers said.

On all iPhones launched since 2018, Bluetooth, NFC, and Ultra Wideband continue to turn on even after the device is turned off.

These chips can run in Low Power Mode (LPM) when the iPhone does not react to screen taps or vibration. The mode is activated either when the user turns off their iPhone or when iOS automatically shuts down due to low battery levels.

Since LPM support is implemented in hardware, it cannot be removed by software updates.

“The Bluetooth and UWB chips are connected to the secure element of the NFC chip, and they store secrets that should be available in the LPM,” the researchers said.

The researchers used a Bluetooth chip to load the malware, which is executed when the iPhone is turned off.

They recommended that Apple consider adding a hardware-based switch to disconnect the battery, which would help users concerned about privacy and monitoring goals.

Apple is said to be familiar with the contents of the paper but has not provided any comments.

price movement: Apple closed Friday’s session 0.19% lower at $138.38, according to Benzinga Pro Data.
