For a long time, Apple’s iPhone lineup started with 64GB of storage and went up to 512GB. stop this with iPhone 13 series, where the base model iPhone 13 starts with a capacity of 128 GB, and iPhone 13 Pro Models up to 1 TB. The iPhone 14 And the iPhone 14 Pro Models continue this tradition. While Joe Maring, Mobile Editor for Digital Trends, stated this Most people can only get by with 128GB of storage On the iPhone 14 or iPhone 14 Pro, I’m thinking here of course not!

When Apple started offering 1TB of storage with the iPhone 13 Pro, that’s what I set out for — and I’ll continue to have 1TB until Apple offers 2TB of storage. Here’s why.

I have (and take) a lot of photos and videos

One of the reasons I upgrade my iPhone every year is because I want the latest and best camera features that Apple has to offer. With the iPhone 14 Pro this year, that means that 48 MP main camera, as well as a return of 2x magnification for portrait mode images. And since I had my first child last year, I knew my iPhone camera use would, too Significantly a plus. In my daughter’s first year, I think I took 3,000 photos of her alone, and that’s just a small part of my entire library of over 37,000 photos and videos that I’ve collected over many years. I’m just one of those people who likes to have all their pictures taken with them – I can’t be the only one, can I?

despite Why I take a lot of pictures, the fact of the matter is that those pictures and memories take up space. I hate that I have minimal storage space (in the case of the iPhone, it’s 128GB) and I constantly get a notification saying that I don’t have enough space for new photos/videos and that I need to free up space before I can take more.

Sure, I can offload photos to my computer, but I’m not on my computer much besides work. I love having my photos and videos on my iPhone because I get emotional sometimes and I like to look back on those special moments in my life. Plus, I especially love sharing my daughter’s favorite photos and videos with friends and family that I may not always see in person.

The Photos app also has a “For You” feature, which highlights featured photos and even collects some memory slideshow videos. I don’t always look at this stuff but when I do I love seeing those old photos and videos pop up. Since I have a lot of old pictures and photos from years, sometimes I forget about them, and this feature is a great way for me to relive those memories.

I’ve also experienced passings in the family, and I don’t want to forget those good times I had.

Apple Photo Formats required Much from space

Most phones these days are capable of recording high definition 4K video. This format is great if you’re trying to make a great home video or are working on a more serious project and want it to look its best ever. Apple also has Cinematic Mode from the iPhone 13 series onwards. For most people, it’s a bit of a gimmick, but a fun feature nonetheless.

Apple also has some professional tools, such as ProRes video and ProRaw image format. ProRes is a high-quality professional video format and is “visually lossless” in terms of detail, so there is no compression in the end result. For this reason, one minute of ProRes video can take up approximately 6 GB of storage space. It’s unlikely that the average person will ever use ProRes, but people in the film industry might need it. Well, 128GB just wouldn’t cut it — in fact, the 128GB models of the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro are limited to just 1080p at 30 frames per second (fps). For ProRes 4K video at 30fps, you need at least 256GB or higher.

For photographers, ProRaw is Apple’s photo format that’s like a mix of JPEG/HEIC and the real RAW format. Although it is not a pure RAW image, ProRaw is still an uncompressed image format that gives you complete control over every little detail in the post-editing process. While ProRaw photos on the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro can take up around 25MB on average due to the 12MP main camera, iPhone 14 ProRaw photos captured at 48MP can take up to 75MB each. . Unedited ProRaw images can look a bit dull compared to processed standard images, so it relies heavily on the actual editing process to look its best.

So, if you like to take a lot of photos or videos—especially in high-quality formats—128GB just isn’t going to do it. You can probably get 256GB or 512GB for these, but the 1TB option lets you get super creative without worrying at all.

It’s all about apps and games

“There is an app for this.”

Remember this adage from the beginning Apple App Store? This is because there really is an app for just about everything. Since I got my start working by reviewing apps, I’ve come across a raft of hundreds, even thousands of apps over the past decade. Of course, every app you downloaded is still there or even works properly on recent iPhones, but as of now, your iPhone 14 Pro has 553 apps and games downloaded on it.

Honestly, I’m not proud of all the digital clutter I have on my phone in terms of apps and games, but I do find it nice to have something on hand when I need it — or even something to keep me entertained when I’m bored and just waiting somewhere. Sometimes I might need an app for one specific thing, and as weak as that sounds, it comes in clutch in those specific situations. I think it’s just part of the “always be prepared” mentality.

Also, even though I don’t play mobile games as much as I used to, I do like to pick up a few games every now and then to keep me busy — especially on Apple Arcade since they’re included with my Premium Apple One subscription. And games these days can take up a lot of space! There are a lot of games that are actually ports of old console games, and there are also mobile versions of popular titles of the moment. For example, you can find Call of Duty: MobileAnd the Genshin effectAnd the Immortal DiabloAnd the asphalt 9And the NBA 2K22And the dead cellsFor example, but not limited.

If you like to play mobile games, especially graphic intensive ones, you better have more storage space. After all, some of these games can take up a few gigabytes of storage space alone, not counting your game save data as well as any patches and updates. When you only have 128GB of storage space, those action-packed games can quickly eat up that storage space.

More space for on-the-go entertainment

I don’t travel much, but when I need a cross-country flight I like to be entertained on the plane. I subscribe to many streaming services, such as Apple Music (Across Apple One), + Apple TVAnd the Disney +And the Netflix, and more. But do you know what I don’t like? Pay for spotty Wi-Fi at 35,000 feet above the air. Fortunately, most streaming services allow you to download media for offline listening or watching, or you can always purchase it through traditional methods, such as the iTunes Store.

When I flew from California to New York earlier this year, I made sure to load up my iPhone with plenty of content to occupy myself. I’m talking entire seasons of some different series, and maybe a movie or two. I may not see everything in one trip (maybe on the way back), but I like to have options. And since these files are downloaded directly to my device, I don’t have to worry about stuttering or other issues that might arise if I’m streaming.

Since a season of a show or movie can be a few gigabytes on its own, this adds up quickly. Having 128GB won’t give you much room if you also have a lot of photos or videos, in addition to apps and games, so 1TB will be best for lots of local media.

1TB means you never have to worry about storage

I suppose if you don’t use your iPhone 14 Pro to take a lot of photos and video, don’t download a lot of apps or games, stream everything, and use cloud storage services to access files, then sure – you can probably only get 128GB. But if you want to use your iPhone 14 Pro to the fullest, getting more storage, especially capping it at 1TB, is the best way to go.

This is especially true if you love taking photos and videos with your iPhone, and even more so now with the impressive new 48MP main camera that beats the iPhone 14 Pro. I honestly love taking pictures with my iPhone 14 Pro, especially of my daughter. Having this much space means you never have to worry about missing out on those special moments. Downloaded apps, games, media – that’s just a cake on a cake.

As long as Apple continues to sell the 1 TB model of iPhone, I will continue to buy it. In fact, I hope one day it will reach 2TB. It’s great to never have to worry about running out of space. As of this writing, I’ve used over 300GB on my 1TB iPhone, in case you were wondering.
