Pine Island Elementary has gone through many challenges over the past three years, but continues to “Glow” In so many ways. Over the past three months PIE has been honored by several local, county and national communities for helping to support the students of the school. Some examples include Live Oak, Fla. Suwannee Springcrest Elementary, which held a toy drive and donated over 1,000 toys to PIE students.

The Bags of Hope organization also supported the PIE Holiday Giving Tree and delivered all the Giving Tree holiday gifts, along with some staff members and friends.

Yorktown Elementary in Yorktown, Indiana, students, staff and families hosted a fundraiser in October and donated all of its proceeds to the families of Pine Island Elementary. The fundraiser was able to raise $3,900 for the students at PIE. They wanted to help local students recover after Hurricane Ian had such a profound impact on the community.

City First Church in Cape Coral brought down hundreds of additional gifts that were placed in brown bags and distributed to students. Other organizations such as Beacon of Hope, Bobby Holloway Jr. Foundation, Matlacha Hookers, VFW, and the Kiwanis Club of Greater Pine Island have also provided support to our students.

In addition, many individual donors on Pine Island and throughout the state have reached out to the school to provide some form of assistance. Principal Dr. Tom Millins said that his school is overwhelmed by the support the school has received from such a diverse group of people. He said that in his 25 years in the Lee County school district, he has never seen this kind of support in any school.

Millins and his staff members, including front office staff Mandy Nelson, Shannon Schaal, Amy Williamson and Lynn Newman, and many volunteers, have spent countless hours organizing all of these various initiatives. This group of individuals not only worked “gift” Initiative, but worked with so many island and local organizations to help support island families.

Also, many thanks to the Pine Island Fire Department, who along with volunteers helped distribute gifts to PIE families during parent pick-ups.

PIE is grateful for the support and wishes everyone a Happy New Year!
