The White House rebukes Trump’s proposal to suspend the Constitution due to the 2020 elections

The White House issued a stern rebuke on Saturday after former President Donald Trump proposed a suspension of the Constitution in his continuing campaign to discredit the results of the 2020 election.

White House spokesman Andrew Bates said in a statement that “attacking the Constitution and everything it stands for is anathema to the soul of our nation and must be universally condemned,” calling the Constitution a “sacred document.”

“You can’t only love America when it wins,” he added.

Trump’s message on the Truth Social platform reiterated the baseless claims he’s made since 2020 that the election was stolen. But he went further by suggesting that the state give up one of its founding documents.

“A fraud so great of this kind and size allows for the termination of all rules, regulations, and articles, even those of the Constitution,” Trump wrote.

The post came a day after Twitter’s new owner, Elon Musk, claimed he would reveal how Twitter has engaged in “suppressing free speech” in the run-up to the 2020 election. But his “Twitter Profiles” did not show the tech giant bent the will of the Democrats.

“Unprecedented Fraud Demands Unprecedented Remedy!” Trump followed up in another post Saturday afternoon on Truth Social.

Trump, who announced last month that he would run for president again, helped launch Truth Social after he was banned from Twitter following the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol. Musk said he would allow Trump to return to Twitter but the former president has not rejoined the platform.

Trump’s continued and unfounded attacks on the outcome of the 2020 election culminated on January 6, 2021 with his supporters’ attack on the US Capitol. Several GOP candidates also echoed his false claims ahead of this year’s midterm elections, but lost their bid to win key positions in the state.

In the weeks since the election, Trump has continued to press the lie that the 2020 election was rigged as he announces his next bid for the White House.

The Democratic National Committee condemned his comments on Saturday, as did many other politicians.

“Trump’s words and actions are unacceptable, they fuel hate and political violence, and they are dangerous,” Representative Don Baer wrote on Twitter.

“Trump just called for suspending the Constitution, which is the straw that broke the camel’s back for zero-sum Republicans, especially those who call themselves constitutional conservatives,” Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) wrote on Twitter.

As he has done before, the former president is baiting GOP leaders to sway his claims.

“I wonder what Mitch McConnell, the Renos, and all the weak Republicans who couldn’t get approval for the 2020 presidential election and get out of the way fast enough are thinking now?” he wrote on Saturday in a subsequent post for Truth Social.
