Skylo’s Direct-to-Device Satellite Service Tipped for Bullitt’s Smartphone – SatNews
Available in the first quarter of 2023, and on show for the first time CES 2023When standard cellular or Wi-Fi coverage is unavailable, the smartphone will have Bullitt’s new messaging service, which connects satellite by satellite through the Skylo network of GEO satellites’ established, partner satellite clusters.
Bullitt and Skylo’s engineering teams have worked closely together over the past two years mediatekA major chipset supplier, to develop the world’s first, 3GPP standards-based approach to satellite NTN or ‘direct-to-device’ connectivity.
For its satellite partnerships, Skylo works with a number of established regional and global satellite operators to enable the always-on availability of machines, sensors and compatible equipment whenever and wherever there is open access to the skies. These satellites, along with landing rights and spectrum, are already in place, allowing for rapid expansion and immediate coverage. The satellites act as a signal repeater between a user and a satellite earth station, where Skylo’s technology and network enable and manage the connections of all end user devices.
Skylo operates on a full-stack, 3GPP standards-based, NTN RAN and Core, and is installed in existing satellite earth stations allowing for vast and consistent geographic coverage supported by existing GEO satellite networks.
The service enables customers to send messages over satellite as they would normally use a phone – as long as they have access to open skies. There is no need for the phone to be pointed at the satellite or held still to make a connection.
,We are thrilled to partner with Skylo to bring satellite messaging to our incredible smartphones. We expect this new satellite messaging service to set a new standard for the mobile industry and we can’t wait for our customers to experience it when they are on their next outdoor adventure.,” Told richard wharton, Co-Founder of Bullitt Group. ,Whether you’re driving through an area without mobile coverage, hiking in the highlands, or skiing on mountain tops, you’re always connected,
,Never lose coverage. That’s Skylo’s mission, and our partnership with Bullitt moves us really close to achieving that promise.” Told Parthasarathy Trivedi, co-founder and CEO of Skylo. ,We started Skylo because we were frustrated by the need to carry a separate device to communicate with satellites and the need to use expensive, proprietary modems with bulky antennas. Now, you can stay connected at all times with a device that’s always in your pocket.,
