STM withdraws ’10 Minutes Max’ promise on remaining bus routes

Montreal transit users who may be used to “10 Minutes Max” bus routes will be waiting a little longer.

The Société de Transport de Montréal (STM) said Friday that it can’t guarantee buses will come every 10 minutes on the eight routes it still served because of the economic strain the transit authority is facing and changing customer habits.

“Due to the current context, the frequency of the service has been readjusted according to passengers: an interval of more than 10 minutes could therefore be seen on our 10 Max lines during peak hours,” says a message on the STM website.

It was a guarantee of a bus coming every 10 minutes it was initially announced in 2010 in 31 routes. In recent years, it was reduced to eight routes: 18 Beaubien, 24 Sherbrooke, 33 Langelier, 64 Grenet, 103 Monkland, 106 Newman, 141 Jean-Talon est and 406 Express Newman.

STM spokeswoman Katherine Roux Groleau said in an email to CTV News that the transit authority will permanently end 10-minute intermediate service on the remaining eight routes effective Jan. 9 due to a “strong determination to properly manage.” public funds and according to our current financial situation.’

Last November, the STM announced a bigger hole in the budget for 2023 than expected. projected a deficit of nearly $78 million and warned of a decrease in the frequency of some routes, as it is struggling with “big financial struggles”.

Roux Groleau said the elimination of the few remaining 10-minute routes on Friday is part of the STM’s adjustment of services to adapt to new customer habits. The city has struggled to keep workers downtown amid a shift to working from home during the pandemic.

“This measure is in line with our desire to optimize our service offer, responding to the needs of bus lines that increased the number of passengers after the pandemic, especially in the industrial sectors, and adapting the service offer on lines with high residual capacity, depending on the load. table and frequency of passages, for example, on lines leaving the city center and on high-frequency lines on weekdays, taking into account new customer habits and telecommuting,” he said.

Most of the routes that originally offered 10 Minutes Max service are still “high frequency” and offer service approximately every 12 minutes.
