Google has begun issuing refunds to previous customers for games, additional content, and subscription feeds purchased through Stadia. I just got my email about what’s going on with my dead game library.

Google Books: “We’re reaching out to let you know what to expect over the next two weeks”. The company says it will attempt to refund the original payment method used to make a purchase. But if the refund doesn’t work—for example, you’ve changed debit cards since Stadia launched—you’ll receive an email with a link to choose another payment method. It seems simple enough.

The refund policy also applies to people who may have deleted their Google Account. If you receive an email from Google saying they had problems getting your money back and there is no follow-up email with instructions, you will have to contact your bank for assistance. annoying!

Refunds will be offered until January 18, 2023, and the company asks you not to contact customer support to request a prompt refund. Google urges you to check your transaction list after logging in at pay.google.com Then click the alerts icon to see if there is a refund waiting.

If you make fewer than 20 purchases on the Stadia store, expect an email for each transaction. I just bought backman game and The Sheikh’s Manuscripts Online, so I imagine receiving two emails with refund details. If you go to Hamm on Stadia and buy more than 21 games — curious to know where Google got that number — you’ll receive an email summary of transactions with additional instructions.

Stadia Pro subscriptions will not be refunded, though you can keep playing it until the service’s last day. The Stadia controller, Founder’s EditionAnd the Premium EditionPlay and Watch with Google TV packages will be redeemed if purchased through the Google Store. But don’t go to Best Buy to ask for a refund of anything you bought there. Also, if you have the Stadia controller, you cannot use it with a third party via Bluetooth. USB-C tethering is required to control games on your PC or other console.

There are more fine details of refund listed in Google support page. If there’s a game you’d like to keep playing in the cloud, publishers like Bethesda and Ubisoft have already begun communicating with people about the switch. I actually got an email right after Stadia closed announce for me The Sheikh’s Manuscripts Online the account. Don’t worry, Bethesda. I have already transferred playtime to my computer.
