Kuo: Only iPhone 15 Pro models will support high-speed data transfers with the USB-C upgrade

The iPhone 15 Pro models planned for next year will support faster wired transfer speeds thanks to the move to USB-C, according to an Apple analyst Ming Chi Kuo.

While all iPhone 15‌ models will feature USB-C ports instead of Lightning ports, faster transfer speeds will be limited to iPhone 15 Pro models. Standard iPhone 15‌ models will continue to offer USB 2.0 speeds, such as Lightning.

Kuo says that transfer speeds will likely “improve significantly” over the ‌iPhone 15 Pro models, with “at least” support for USB 3.2 or Thunderbolt 3. With the upgrade, iPhone 15 Pro models will be able to transfer videos and other file types at faster speeds, with Kuo expected to significantly improve user experience.

USB 2.0 transfer speeds are limited to 480MB/s, while USB 3.2 supports speeds of up to 20GB/s. Thunderbolt 3 supports data transfer speeds of up to 40Gb/s, so if Kuo is correct, there will be quite a difference in wired data transfer speeds between the iPhone 15 Pro and non-Pro models.

Apple is moving to USB-C across its line of products, and the first USB-C iPhones are due out next year. Apple is making the change to comply with European regulations that require electronic devices to have public, non-proprietary charging methods.
