Some Pokemon Scarlet and Violet players are asking for refunds

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet‘s release has been plagued by bugs, ranging from weird graphical glitches to useful usesin a most frustrating set of game crashes and performance issues. Along with complaints about the game’s design, some fans have decided to request refunds for their copies of Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet.

Immediately after starting the game, threads began to appear IN Pokemon subreddit with players recounting their attempts to request a refund from Nintendo customer service. While the Nintendo eShop has a flat policy that doesn’t allow refunds due to a change of mind, an accidental purchase, or because players don’t like the game, it will honor refunds for defective products.

Players must go through customer service to request a refund, where they will speak with a Nintendo representative to advocate for their case. Most Reddit users who have posted about successful refunds say they used performance issues and game crashes to argue that the game is flawed and requires a refund. User u/Hotdog_Daddy even claimed that “the representative actually told me that given the situation regarding the condition of the Pokemon S/V, she would file my case to ensure that the refund was approved.”

So far players have reported successful refunds in a number of regions, with some countries having strong consumer protection laws that entitle customers to a refund in cases where a product is faulty or different from what is advertised. Not all refund seekers have been successful, however, and others have said the process to get them accepted for a refund was deliberately tedious.

Nintendo has not released any official statement on Pokemon refunds at this time. While complaints about performance issues have been widespread, it’s unlikely that Pokemon Violet and Scarlet will achieve the same level of widespread payback that prompted Cyberpunk 2077 to offer a unconditional refund window after its release. Despite its problems, Pokemon Violet and Scarlet have sold a large number of units since its release, setting records not only for the Pokemon series, but for Nintendo games in general.
