A Fresno high school introduced a new ban on cellphone use in the classroom and the school community wasn’t happy about itFresno B reported on Thursday.

The policy start date at Pollard High School has been pushed back several times this school year.

Officials emphasized that the goal of the policy is to reduce distractions in the classroom. But some students questioned whether the ulterior motive behind the policy had to do with a racist photo taken in the high school weight room in May, which triggered a student strike and demanded accountability, The Bee reported.

The Bee reports that hundreds of responses flooded the comments section of Pollard’s ad ban on Instagram. “So you wouldn’t listen to the student body, the parents, or the alumni on an issue that matters to everyone?” Posted by a commenter. Another wrote: “Let’s see how long this lasts.” “You worry about phones instead, let’s focus more on our children’s education and well-being with all the school threats. This is ridiculous. I am a parent and I am not with this at all.”

Politics has also become a talking point for candidates in the hotly contested race for the Pollard District seat on the Fresno Unified School Board in Tuesday’s election, Bee reported.
